Visit and Internship Activity of Teachers and Students from the Rare Earth Experimental Class to Rare Earth Enterprises
To further enhance disciplinary literacy, broaden professional knowledge, develop industrial skills, and fully demonstrate the new talent cultivation model of broad scope, solid foundation, moral integrity, and strong practice, on September 16, the Institute for Advanced Study and the Rare Earth Research Institute organized nearly 40 teachers and students from the 2020 Rare Earth Experimental Class to visit rare‑earth enterprises. The event was held as part of the Industry‑University‑Research Exchange and Cooperation of the Jiangxi Rare Earth Society and the on‑site enterprise teaching for the Rare Earth Experimental Class of Nanchang University.
In the morning, the group arrived at Jiangxi Jiangtungsten Rare Metal New Materials Co., Ltd. Accompanied by Manager Tao Liming, the teachers and students visited the factory workshops. Manager Tao introduced the production equipment and explained in detail the technological processes including batching, smelting, vacuum melt spinning, crushing, and crystallization. After the tour, Manager Tao presented the corporate culture, scientific research achievements, and social contributions of the company in the exhibition hall, followed by a symposium in the conference room.
At the symposium, Professor Li Yongxiu introduced the participating teachers. Professor Professor Zou Wennan presented the basic information of the Institute for Advanced Study and the educational philosophy and training concepts of the Rare Earth Experimental Class, and expressed gratitude to Manager Tao for the warm reception. Manager Tao welcomed the teachers and students from the rare‑earth discipline of Nanchang University and introduced the actual production, scientific research, and cutting‑edge developments of the enterprise.
Subsequently, Professor Deng Zhenzhou shared his personal experience in scientific research in Longnan and used failure cases to encourage students to form independent thinking, maintain persistent exploration spirit in interdisciplinary learning. Professor Liu Yong emphasized the importance of industry‑university‑research experience and raised expectations for the students. Other teachers also delivered speeches successively, sharing their impressions of the visit, affirming the positive significance of the activity, and noting that the open and shared industry‑university‑research cooperation platform provides broad prospects for the interdisciplinary development of rare earth sciences.
Finally, Dean Ye Linzhen affirmed the practical teaching activity, pointed out that cooperation between enterprises, universities and researchers should be further promoted, and proposed a long‑term vision for multi‑platform interactions including academic exchanges and Party‑building exchanges. After the symposium, students from the Rare Earth Experimental Class asked questions actively and conducted in‑depth exchanges with enterprise leaders and teachers.
In the afternoon, the group visited Jiangxi Golden Century New Materials Co., Ltd. At the symposium, Director Meng Qingjiang introduced the history of Jiangxi’s rare‑earth industry based on his own experience and put forward the qualities that college students should possess. Manager Jiang Yalong explained the development of the rare‑earth industry in recent years and the opportunities and growth of the company. Participants exchanged views freely on the cutting‑edge of the rare‑earth industry and the positive impacts of industry‑academy exchanges.
After the meeting, led by the company leaders and teachers, the group entered the industrial park and observed the specific rare‑earth production processes at close range, including raw material preparation, solvent extraction and separation, and environmental protection treatment. This deepened their understanding of the principles of industrial production and provided students with a vivid practical experience beyond textbooks.
Through this on‑site enterprise teaching activity, the students expressed that they had gained a lot from the new experience of industry‑education integration. They strengthened their confidence in mastering rare‑earth knowledge and laying a solid interdisciplinary foundation, and will further integrate theory with practical application in future studies.
